Yesterday, I visited two National Trust places. I love nature and historic sites filled with history. Recently, I’ve been very busy with work, so being in nature was just what I needed.
The National Trust is a leading charity and membership organization dedicated to heritage and nature conservation across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Officially known as the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty, it works to preserve and protect historic sites, natural landscapes, and cultural treasures for public benefit.
Dovedale

Dovedale, a breathtaking valley owned by the National Trust, draws over a million visitors each year. Carved by the tranquil waters of the River Dove, this stunning landscape stretches for just over 3 miles (5 km), running from the picturesque village of Milldale in the north to a dramatic wooded ravine near Thorpe Cloud and Bunster Hill in the south.
One of the valley’s most charming features is a series of iconic stepping stones that cross the river, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its natural beauty. Nearby, the Dove Holes, two fascinating caves, add an air of mystery to the area.

Beyond these highlights, Dovedale boasts an array of striking limestone formations, including the towering Ilam Rock, the graceful arch of Viator’s Bridge, and other notable landmarks like Lovers’ Leap and Reynard’s Cave. Whether you’re drawn by the scenic views or the geological wonders, Dovedale offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers.

Ilam Park

Nestled in the heart of the Peak District, National Trust Ilam Park is a picture-perfect escape that feels like stepping into a storybook. With its rolling green meadows, historic parkland, and breathtaking views of Dovedale, Ilam Park offers a magical blend of nature, history, and tranquillity.
The centrepiece of the park is the charming Ilam Hall, a grand 19th-century mansion framed by the River Manifold and lush woodlands. While much of the original hall is no longer standing, the remaining portions, including its stunning gardens and ornate architecture, make for an idyllic spot to soak in the beauty of the landscape.

Visitors can wander through the park’s enchanting pathways, lined with ancient trees and bursts of wildflowers. From here, it’s easy to venture further into Dovedale, a nearby valley renowned for its stepping stones, dramatic limestone cliffs, and serene river scenes. Ilam Park also offers family-friendly trails, perfect for picnics, leisurely strolls, or even spotting local wildlife like kingfishers and butterflies.

For those looking to indulge, the on-site tea room serves up a delightful selection of cakes and refreshments—just the thing after exploring the area. With dog-friendly trails and seasonal events like guided walks and outdoor performances, Ilam Park has something for everyone.

There are also some incredible didactic games, like enchanting riddles, that make the journey even more thrilling!

Whether you’re looking to connect with nature, uncover history, or simply enjoy some peaceful moments, Ilam Park is a gem that embodies the charm of the English countryside.
See you in the next post!
